The Myth About Slow Play

Slow play has become a problem in golf. The biggest myth is that you need to be a better golfer to play faster. Wrong! You just need to be smarter and more alert on the course.

Things to Help Speed Up Your Game

  1. Get to the course early. Have your equipment ready 10–15 minutes ahead of your tee time. Slow play starts on the first hole.
  2. Turn off your cell phone! Leave cell phones on ONLY if they provide yardages for you.
  3. Have your glove on, ball ready, and club selected before you get to the tee. In the fairway and on the green, play when you are ready and not necessarily when you are furthest from the hole.
  4. Play fast enough to keep up with the group ahead of you. The group behind you has no bearing on your speed of play.
  5. Although the rules allow 3 minutes to look for a lost ball, use common sense. If it’s lost in dense bushes or in a hazard, play another ball. Looking for golf balls other than your own is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN!
  6. Technology is ruining the game! Use 1 reliable device ONLY! If you know you are too far to hit to the area you want to, who cares how far it is?
  7. Leave your clubs or cart where you are going to exit the green, not in front of the green.
  8. Mark your scorecard at the next tee, NEVER at the hole you just finished.

If you observe even a few of the points outlined for faster play, you will be amazed at how much better you play, how much more enjoyable your game is, and how much time you save in a round of golf, regardless of your ability.
